The Cunard shipping company was founded by Canadian businessman, Samuel Cunard, with the launch of the Royal Mail ship RMS Brittania for his British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company in 1840. The company did not become known by the name of Cunard until it became the Cunard Steamship Company Ltd in 1879, fourteen years after the death of it’s founder.
